You can simply see where their mailbox is, if it's the same as their email then they are using it as UM, if the mailbox is something other than the email mailbox than it' VMO.

Another way to check is to look at the licensing in unity admin. It will tell you license available and use

Looking at licensing will only tell you how the user was configured, does not mean that the user is actually used as UM or VMO, it's just a setting in COS. Also, Unity 4.2 and below did not have separation for UM and VMO.
