Hi,

We had a problem yesterday where our BGP session kept on resetting because of the following error.

Would anyone know if the latest version of cisco IOS fixes this ?

Connections established 10; dropped 10

Last reset 00:00:02, due to BGP

Notification sent, invalid or corrupt AS path

Message received that caused BGP to send a Notification:

Dave,

How do you know it's a bug?

Andrew,

I dont know if it is a bug or by design.

Maybe the latest version of Cisco ios will handle the invalid AS path differently ?

I dont know why the router doesnt disregard the prefix with bad AS path and keep the BGP session alive.

Thanks

Dave

Dave,

I understand where you are coming from, but upgrading is not a fix all solution.

A reboot fixes all right?!

What I am trying to say - is without definitive information that says this is a bug or by design - to upgrade may make things worse. I personally would be searching the bug track to see if this is an actual issue - or just a one off, where a device reboot would actually work.

Let me ask you - how long as the router be running/routing BGP before this hicup? Have you had any other issues with this device in the past? have you been running the version of IOS since you took the router out the box?

Andrew,

We actually had 2 seperate routers that reset their BGP sessions after the invalid AS paths yesterday.

No other problems with either routers. Same IOS on both routers for years.

They would be up for around 6 months or so.

I know that other ISP's had a similar problem also between 4:40pm - 5:30pm GMT yesterday.

Thanks

Dave

OK - so its not really an IOS issues, but a situation on the internet or who you peer with?

Andrew,

Just found this:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/02/17/net_instability/

Looks like we will have to get the latest version cisco IOS :)

Thanks,

Dave

how old is your IOS?

Andrew,

We are running IOS (tm) 3700 Software (C3725-JS-M), Version 12.3(3g), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

Thanks,

Dave

I have seen the message %BGP-3-NOTIFICATION: sent to neighbor (invalid or corrupt AS path) when an eBGP neighbor is configured to AS-Prepend using an AS number that is different from it's own. However the issue I describe is not an exact match for the symptom described in the original post.
