I want to upgrade my 4404 controller to 5-2-178-0. I am on 5.2.157.0
in the controller I go to commands/upload.
File type: configuration
Configuration File Encryption: Checked
Encryption Key: I dont know what to put here
Transfer Mode: TFTP
IP Address: 172.16.19.112
File Path: C:\Controllerupdate
File Name: AIR-WLC4400-K9-5-2-178-0.aes
i open tfpt32
Current Directory: C:\Controllerupdate
IP: 172.16.19.112
I hit the upload button on the controller and it tells me File transfer failed!.
What am I doing wrong?

If C:\Controllerupdate is the default path,
try leaving the File Path: option blank on the controller.
I use linux tftp with /tftpboot as my default tftp dir and never use the file path option when upgrading my controllers

when you say default path do you mean the path that is in tftp32's "current directory" when i start it up?
If so then C:\controllerupdate is not. I changed it. It always points to my desktop when I open it.

Whatever you specify in tftp32 as the filepath will be the default path.
for example:
if you set the path in tftp32 to C:\temp
that is your default path. You do not need to specify anything on the controller
if you place the image file in say, C:\temp\images, but C:\temp is your default setting, then the File Path option on the controller would be
/images

Okay.
To upgrade the controller, do I need to go to download or upload. I tried upload and things actually started happening for me.
My tftp32 was responding to me but while it was almost done it gave me this message
% Error: Config file transfer failed - Error while writing output file
I was using file type configuration. Should I be using code or something else?

I updated one controller with one more to go. Just in case i mess something up, is there a way to save a config on my 2nd controller in case I have to go back?

You want to save the config? Sure you can.
Go to Commands -> Upload File -> File Type: Configuration -> Filename: Filename you want
Hope this helps for you.
