Can we have a report spam option here on netpro forum.

I have observed posts from "Steven Chen" on all forum topics. ID - " pass4surenl" Network Inc

There is one on the NetPro Idea center -

-> Sushil

I have this problem too.

Hey Sushil,

Hope all is well my friend!

Yes, in the upper right-hand corner of all Forum pages is "NetPro Feedback" which is just for reporting this type of thing or any issues here. As you can see by the deletion of these horrid posts from the Forums, many people felt the same way you did and used the feedback tool to notifiy the great moderators here.

Look just below the Search Function;

Advanced Search Print| *NetPro Feedback | Help

Hey Rob, nice to hear from you.

My intention was to have a specific field to report spam. Anyways if these things are addressed through the single NetPro Feedback part that's good and fine with me. I am glad that the issue was addresses and that too in a short span of time :)

I wish there should be a way to give points to NetPro team as well for the good work :)

The NetPro team and moderators are good indeed. Without prompt support from moderators forums can easily get out of hand and people just can't post replies in them, even if they were getting 10000 points for each post (I know I wouldn't do it even for money). They also try to satisfy every science fiction idea of members on how to improve the site. :-)

Which brings me to the suggestion of some type of link/button that activates spam report and is an included option at the context of each post (people should be logged in to use this feature). This will make the report easier for the person that reports it. I don't know if this might cause other issues, but I am sure our experienced moderators know more and can inform us about the dangers of such features.

Kind Regards,

Hi Maria,

Fortunately, spam has never been a significant issue for NetPro. For this reason we didn't add a specific link at the conversation level in order to keep the user interface as clean as possible. Currently, if you see a post that is inappropriate we ask you use the NetPro feedback form (link below). I know the feedback form looks overwhelming, but just so everyone knows none of fields are mandatory. This means if you see spam all you need to do is paste the link in the 'feedback' field and send. That said, if spam becomes a more serious problem we can definitely add a permanent link at the conversation level.!Form

Hi Dan,

May I be allowed to report a spam?

Cisco should send these twits a bill for the advertising space.

LOL Scott!

Dan, I think the monster heard you saying "fortunately" and decided to sent some work for your team. I have the feeling that this or any other made up account will keep keeping you busy who knows for how long. I guess it is not easy to make people just stop using their keyboards to express themselves (Am I being polite here or what? ;-)

marikakis Thu, 03/05/2009 - 00:23

I also think those guys are trying to detect the time that Dan and the team try to get some good night sleep! That's the problem when manual procedures are used to resolve issues, especially security related ones. When I was working in an ISP, DDoS attack would start some time after my theoretical time to go home or during the night.

I propose the following:

In the rating drop-down, you could include a spam field (to keep interface clean). When a certain number of members (e.g. 3) denote a post as spam, post gets somewhat hidden (disappearing completely might be too violent, I don't know). A problem with this proposition is that the original post does not include a rating option. I think this has been discussed in the past. It could be that original post has spam option only, if this makes decision about this or implementation easier.

Let's see who gets the most spam points ;-) I am joking. This need not appear in the forum or in posts that have not exceeded the spam threshold, but could help Dan to locate common spammers if more drastic measures are needed. Still, I hope nothing I propose is needed. I sent my ideas just in case.

One last idea: if someone opens a conversation almost simultaneously at all or many sections of NetPro, I suppose we all agree it is not normal, and perhaps you could just deal with this and leave the rest for future reference. This feature could be called "rate-limit the opening of conversations" ;-) Person would have to contact Dan to open more than (e.g. 3) conversations in a day or close in time. Let the spammers use the feedback form to report their right to speak, instead of us using it all the time to report their inappropriate posts!

marikakis Thu, 03/05/2009 - 01:16

The rate-limit might cause them to create more accounts. A, there is no end to human imagination. I guess you could not make account setup slower, but you can keep them busy for a while trying to figure out what to do. Are you locating source IP addresses as well? If so, have the network engineers (this is cisco after all :-) sent all the spam packets to null0 before they even reach your web servers ;-) This will keep them even more busy and I will not post anything else that might help them. They can try to study to figure out what to do for themselves.

Those issues are like playing chess. Let's see who gets checkmatted...

marikakis Thu, 03/05/2009 - 01:48

The previous post refers to the known issue that pollutes all sections of NetPro from time to time and I did not mention it for general use.

Hey Folks,

I really like Maria's ideas here. It would be nice to be able to remove these clowns useless posts without having to ruin Dans weekend! +5 points here Maria for this great idea along with all your superb body of work here :)

I kind of took this case personally. You can guess there have been many times that I could not go home because some weird people would keep attacking our routers. I had CPU usage windows all over my screen and doing work only in the middle of the screen while my eyes would also scan the CPU usage to detect attacks directly and stop it before going further inside...

Kind Regards,

If you decide to do anything I suggest, I am fully ok with removing all my posts in this conversation.

Since we are discussing features, allow me to describe the ideal feature that would solve all security issues that can ever possibly exist!

I was once working in the same office with a colleague specialized in ATM switches (Cisco Stratacom series such as IGX/BPX/MGX). We would always have fun arguing about whether IGX is better than routers :-)

One of the times we were being attacked from the Internet, the attack was so heavy that there was nothing effective to be done from my side except to contact other providers upstream for help and hope for the best.

He then told me: A, IGX's do not face such issues! And in the next firmware release, they will automatically detect attacks that hit your routers, a hand would come out of the IGX, grab the attacker and beat him up!

We have been waiting for this feature for years now! :-)

I just watched some videos with cisco security response in the realm, which I have been ignoring for days. Have you seen it? It was very thoughtful of cisco to include a blonde woman in the comic, although I am not blonde! To be honest, when I was faced with attacks coming from our exit points, the adrenaline levels would climb so high, I felt like I was in a castle and I was using my shield to stop the high rates of packets, which might be an idea for the next episodes! I will be waiting for the "hand" feature to appear in the next episodes! :-)
