From what I've read, the most advanced feature set should win a stack election and should be the image run by the entire stack. From other posts, also believe you want to insure the different feature images are all on the same version.
Do note, if there's only one advanced feature image in the stack, and that member fails, the stack should revert to a lower featured image unless there's a least one other stack member with the same feature set.
Also note, when you upgrade the stack, you'll need to be careful not to flash the whole stack since that may violate some member licenses.

Hmm not heard of running the stack with different images, if this is possible then it could be a bad thing as stated if the switch with the advanced IOS fails it reverts back to the basic IOS and you loose the features associated with it.

You can mix and match, but this will not be good for redundancy purposes. Please see chapter 5 of the document below:

Your reference is for the 3750-E, not the 3750G. Similar reference for the 3750 series can be found here: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3750/software/release/12.2_46_se/configuration/guide/swstack.html#wp1191486.
What's appears to be critical is same SDM template and same stack protocol versions. Although same version is recommended, note master election process takes into account software feature set.
Redundancy is an issue, if stack member fails and it's the only member with the advanced feature set image.

Yes same version is recommended but not same feature set, election only takes into account feature set if there is no winner on the previous steps 1 - 3. SDM template looks like it is only different on the 3750 - 12s.
