I have a helpdesk which is using a shared Unity mailbox for overflow. Is there any way to query the mailbox from another program, so I can display the number of messages on a wallboard?

You should be able to access the mailbox via outlook localhost/exchange/username

Sorry, I wonder if you could be a bit more explicit? I'm not the software developer, so how would I specify the interface?

Ok, Not sure what are asking.
You can view the email messages in a voicemail only system using outlook. To do this you go into a browser and enter the
followin as the url:
localhost/exchange/username
