Choice of Platform

Unanswered Question

What would be the best platform for the following requirement..

2 x 100 Mb links

1 x 45Mb link

1 x 20Mb

Requirement to run BGP, 4 BGP peers and a routing table of about 4000 routes which might increase to 10000. All links would be on ethernet.

Would a 3750 Metro or a 4900M be the best bet or we should look for the higher end ASR series router


I have this problem too.

If u think the traffic rate is of the order of 100Mb etc , i would prefer to use a switch ..

3750 should be ok but keep a tab on the number of routing entries.. If i remember it supports only 12000 odd unicast routing entries.

Another option is to look for a 4948. But i have seen that under normal operations the 4948 CPU is around 35% so could be a factor. may be if someone who has used it can comment

The HWIC-2FE's are not supported on the 28xx series

For close to 300 Mbps, routers for consideration include the 7200VXR with NPE-G2 (boarderline?), the 7304 with NSE-150, or the ASR 1002 with ESP5.

Any small L3 switch should be able to easily forward 300 Mbps, even the 8 port 3560 which can run BGP. But, as Narayan notes, concern would be dealing with the number of routes. Beside volume limitations, there's routing's control plane processing impact, e.g. BGP table scan. Also, the small L3 switches tend to be offer fewer IOS features than routers, especially LAN oriented switches.

If the 4900M is suitable, so might be the 4948 (as Narayan also suggests). In addition to the 3750 Metro, you could also consider the 3560,3750,3560-E,3750-E and other Metro switches, e.g. ME 6500, ME 4900.
