Cisco neighbour change message

Unanswered Question
Mar 3rd, 2009

One of my Cisco switches gets the following two messages in the lsystem logs:

%DUAL-5-NBRCHANGE: IP-EIGRP(0) 1: Neighbor x.x.x.x (Vlanx) is down: holding time expire

%DUAL-5-NBRCHANGE: IP-EIGRP(0) 1: Neighbor x.x.x.x (Vlanx) is up: new adjacency

It happens quite often with the same two devices, but doesn't seem to affect anything.

Can someone explain what the message means and the possible implications?

I have this problem too.

Hi RVirdi!

You might find better assistance in the Routing/Switching forums, as most people in here are more focused on wireless issues.

This message simply means that your EIGRP neighbors are having connectivity problems. EIGRP has a timeout function that will drop a neighbor if a Hello isn't received in a certain amount of time. You should check their connection and replace any hardware/cabling that might be defective between them.
