Block Internet radio streaming

Hi all, I've had a request to block users from using a streaming internet radio site. They access the site via a vista widget they have installed on their desktop. I'll installed the application on my PC and found that when the application is running the traffic appears as http (could it be mms over http?).

Any suggestions on how to block this application would be great.

Thanks

Wes

Wes,

Blocking the streaming depends entirely on how it is accessing the internet. The only thing that we know for sure is that it's not accessing the site via HTTP, otherwise the WSA would have blocked it (assuming you've got that site set to block).

It's fairly common for streaming players to use RTSP or MMS directly on their native ports. This will bypass the WSA. If this is the case, there isn't much that you can do other then block it on your firewall.

There are a few other methods the client could be using as well to avoid the proxy.

Your best bet is to take a packet capture on the client machine when it connects to the streaming server, to see exactly how it gets out to the server.

Cheers for the tips Josh. I used wireshark and found the websites/IPs the widget was accessing - (this paticular radio station has a different website for each capital city most of these were not categorized by Ironport).
I added a custom url category and added the websites/ips in there.

Thanks for your help.

Wes,

No problem! I'm glad you were able to get it working.
