HSRP with two groups for load balancing

Hi,

If I use two HSRP groups with two routers back up each other in all manners and put the routes in my internal network device to both virtual IPs for the same source subnet, will it send the traffic 50-50 percent to the same IPs (routers).

like:

HSRP group 1 IP: 10.10.10.1

HSRP group 2 IP: 10.10.10.2

in inside network device (say ASA):

route outside 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.10.10.1

route outside 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.10.10.2

Just want to confirm it will work for sure.

Hello,

you can

You can define up to three equal cost default route entries per device. Defining more than one equal cost default route entry causes the traffic sent to the default route to be distributed among the specified gateways. When defining more than one default route, you must specify the same interface for each entry.

see

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa80/configuration/guide/ip.html#wp1047900

but you could avoid to use the two HSRP groups and point directly to the two routers.

I understand that you can have some advantages in using HSRP

Hope to help

Giuseppe

I want to use HSRP for Hardware with link redundancy and I am running BGP on these routers...will it be fine..

Hi guys

Giuseppe i think the issue here the ASA will not loadbalance the traffic over equal cost pathes with tow static routes

not like a router that use per flow or per packet with cef loadbalncing !!!

it is better to use it as redundat with a firewall

forexample

say u have tow internal networks 10.1.1.0 and 20.1.1.0

divid ur network to tow subnets and make tow static rotes for each subnet

for example

for example rouet outside 10.1.1.0 255.255.255.128 10.1.1.1

for example rouet outside 10.1.1.0 255.255.255.128 10.1.1.2 20

for the other half the revers

for example rouet outside 10.1.1.128 255.255.255.128 10.1.1.2

for example rouet outside 10.1.1.128 255.255.255.128 10.1.1.1 20

but be carefull from asymeryic routing

good luck

if helps rate

Hi,

I have hosted site that is mapped to one public IP, I am using only one internal network for that.

What should be best choice in this case.

I checked on ASA guide it does load balance for two static route of same cost ver 8.0 (4)

if ASA 8.0 support it this is good now
