Help - cannot set up SRW2024P LAN

I am trying to connect the following:

- RCA broadband cable modem(internet)

- Vista PCs

I've gone through the user's guide setup, switch is set to factory defaults. No matter what order I connect them, and what order I power them up, I cannot get a connection through the SRW2024P switch.

Is there some critical step I am missing?

Should I set the switch to DHCP (vice the default IP/subnet)?

Should I manually set the IPs on my pc's?

The only way I can even interface with the webview is by changing my IP to something like 192.168.1.101 (switch default IP is 192.168.1.254).

Please help! I've been working on this for a week now, and am starting to think there is something wrong with the switch. Hoping someone can tell me it is me....

Forgot to add -- I have used LELA numerous times and it has not helped.... I go through all steps and end up with nothing.
