Pix 535 - How do you determine which slot your interfaces are in ?

Hi,

I have a number of Pix 535's but i dont seem to be able to determine which slot my interfaces a plugged into ?

It doesnt seem clear how to determine this, and of concern to me is if i need someone to work on an interface physically i wont be able to determine which slot the interface is in

Any helps appreciated

Hi Stuart,

On PIX 7.x and 8.x, you can look at the output of 'show interface'. The first number in the interface name will denote the slot number (i.e. Ethernet1/0 is the first interface in slot number 1).

I don't have a PIX running 6.x to look at, but try looking through the output of 'show version'. If you have physical access to the device, you can determine the slot number just by examining the unit. Here is a diagram that shows the slot numbers:

I am runnig ver 6.x, should of mentioned that.

My show ver looks along the lines of

0: gb-ethernet0: address is 000e.0c9e.d676, irq 255

1: gb-ethernet1: address is 000e.0c80.c979, irq 255

2: ethernet0: address is 000e.0c83.348b, irq 10

3: ethernet1: address is 000e.0c83.31ce, irq 11

4: ethernet2: address is 000e.0c83.3486, irq 10

5: ethernet3: address is 000e.0c83.346e, irq 10

6: ethernet4: address is 000e.0c83.332b, irq 255

7: ethernet5: address is 000e.0c83.332e, irq 11

In this case i am fortunate that i have someone who can view the back of the chasis for me, though some of these FW's are around the globe so its awkward.

Anyway his physical check tells me this

- *** Empty ***

0 Fibre

1 Fibre

2 Ethernet

3 Ethernet

4 Ethernet

5 Ethernet

6 Ethernet

7 Ethernet

8 *** Empty ***

So is the number before the interface on the show version the slot number ?

For example

2: ethernet0: address is 000e.0c83.348b, irq 10

Is ethernet 0 in slot 2 ?

Hi Stuart,

Yes, I believe you are correct, but perhaps someone who has a PIX 6.x in front of them can confirm this for sure.
