We have several 4500 series switches with Sup 4 and 5s with the cat4000 images. We have a Sup 6 E, It is running the cat4500 image. is the difference possibly the E-Series?

I think it depens on the sup. This is what I get if i try to download software for 4500 series switches. If you look at the list Sup4 and 5s have "Cisco Catalyst 4000/4500 " before the sup, and Sup 6 E only has Catalyst 4500.

Yes, i noticed that as well. The newest releases are

The SG are for cat4500 and the EW are for the cat4000 IOSs. I don't get what the differences are. Can i upgrade the switch to a cat4500 IOS if i'm running a cat4000. I tried upgrading and it wouldn't take the image, invalid "must start with device name"

Ok. I think you are not trying to download ip base image. I skimmed through the document below, and I believe that you can use only ip base version of cat4500 IOS with sup V. For others, you need to have sup v-10G.

ok, so you're saying i should probably use the cat4000 if i want to use full featured routing protocols like EIGRP or OSPF? If i use the cat4500 then i'm limited to the IPBASE image because i have a standard supV? Thanks for the help.

Correct, from what I have read so far, cat4500 is available for sup v only for IPBASE image.

Thats incorrect for a sup V they have enterprise versions. I think we are getting hung up on semantics. I believe they just changed the name . Up thru the EWA releases they were named cat4000 . When they went to the SG releases they changed it to 4500 when they went to code to support the -E chassis . The SG series will work fine on a sup V ,below is the latest version of enterprise for a Sup V. Besides any EWA release is End Of Life in November and any releases for the EWA train stop at that point and you have to go to the SG train .
