LAP's will not forget old WLC

Hi - Our company deployed WiSM's at key points across the country and has the individual site LAP's associate to them using DHCP option 43. The site I am at has a 4402 WLC, so we are moving off this to be assimilated with the rest. The problem is that the LAP's will not associate to the WiSM. (I should note that a new LAP has no problem) The Clear Config button in the WLC GUI apparently does NOT reset the LAP to factory standards. Our answer was to make Mobility Peers between the WiSM and the WLC then move the AP's over - this works fine, but I need to remove the 4402 but the AP's lose their way home then. I got out a ladder and consoled into one device and tried to add the "lwapp ap controller ip address 137.xx.xx.xx" command, but it will not allow it as the config is locked.

Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks .. Dave

This is what I usually do if I just want to totally reset the AP:

First, check the flash:

lap_1131#dir

Directory of flash:/

2 -rwx 279 May 09 2008 11:52:20 +00:00 env_vars

4 -rwx 6168 May 09 2008 11:52:20 +00:00 private-multiple-fs

6 drwx 256 May 09 2008 11:49:05 +00:00 c1130-k9w8-mx.124-3g.JA2

5 drwx 128 Mar 01 2002 00:03:43 +00:00 c1130-rcvk9w8-mx

15998976 bytes total (10716672 bytes free)

Then delete the LWAPP image:

lap_1131#delete /r /f flash:/c11310-k9w8-mx.124-3g.JA2

Not the one the has rcv in it!!!!!!

Thirdly reload the AP:

lap_1131#reload

Then issue a clear lwapp private-config

You'll end up with a clear AP.

If the LAP is on a WLC, you can cli into that WLC and assign a username and password. This way you can log in and you will not get the error "Command is disabled".

config ap username password all

Have you tried DNS,with CISCO-LWAPP-CONTROLLER and point it at the WiSM? When the AP comes up it should look at the DNS and phone home to the WiSM.

The "lwapp ap controller ip address X.X.X.X> will only work if the AP is running the RCV (aka "lite") IOS.

If you still have the ladder and console in place, what you can do (not try since I know this will work) is to delete the LWAPP IOS. But before you do so, make sure that the RCV IOS is available.

After you've deleted the LWAPP IOS, you have but a short window to type the "lwapp ap controller ip address x.x.x.x" on the AP before the AP starts downloading the firmware (this will make it difficult to type the command in).

Does this make sense to you?

Thanks .. I will give it a try and report back!
