Hooooo boy. You're going to open a long and heated discussion.

Can you be more specific? Are you interested in router or switch function, etc.

One is labeled 7600, the other 6500. (Perhaps different chassis colors too, depends on the vintage.)

Seriously though, from a hardware chassis perspective they appear almost identical, i.e. similar performance specs, run many of the same cards, used to run same software. However, Cisco markets them differently. The 7600 "supports" more WAN cards and is marketed as a "router", the 6500 "supports" LAN cards and service modules and is marketed as a Enterprise L3 switch.

Hi Jose,

Can you please provide the diff b/w wan card and layer-3 Lan card. Both will support for MPLS-VPN, QOS, right? How does it differ?

Hi,

7600 supports some new and advanced BGP features and OER.

In terms of HW, 7600 supports more SIP/SPA WAN interface cards on its 12.2(32)SR IOS software. The major differences between WAN cards (SIP/SPA) and LAN cards (WS-67xx/65xx/61xx) are the WAN cards support QoS features like shaping when configured via MQC.

HTH,

jerry
