HSRP: Hellos, states

Answered Question
Mar 20th, 2009

Hi networkers,

1. Which switch/router sends Hellos? is it only the Active and Standby routers or all the standby group routers?

2. Is there a difference between Hello messages and Speak messages?

3. After an Active router and a Standby router have been elected, in what state do other routers become?

I have this problem too.

Hello Wassim,

1) only the Active and Standby

2) I think Speak is a state used during election of Active and Standby

3) the other routers move back from Speak state to Listen state and listen to HSRP hello messages from Active and Standby router
