Cisco 2851

I currently have a Cisco 2851 router running the following IOS

C2800NM-ADVIPSERVICESK9-M), Version 12.4(9)T

We have two additional HWIC-4ESW cards installed in the 2851 router.

The first card works ok as a layer 2 and 3 but the second card only works as a layer two device.

Can I replace the 2 HWIC-4ESW cards with a HWIC-9-D-ESW card and can all 9 ports used with different VLAN's and at layer 3?

Hi Jonathan,

I believe you will have to connect the two HWIC-4ESW cards with a cross-over cable to get them to work.

They are L2 devices only, there is no backplane connection between them.

The same applies to having two HWIC-9-D-ESW cards in the one chassis - you need to connect them externally.

I can't find this in a document, but I think I have read it in a Cisco doc before.

Hope this helps
