If you are talking about switch clustering, then it's usefull to "manage" a stack of switches with only ONE IP Address.
This is very useful if someone deployed a switch, out of the box, and into a remote site without even configuring the IP Address and the correct port details.
This helped me alot, much to my colleagues chagrin.
