WLC Boot Problem

Unanswered Question
Apr 1st, 2009

A 2106 wireless LAN controller fails to boot. The output to the console reaches the statement "Launching BootLoader..." after which I see a few lines of random characters, but no primary image boot. It appears as if the bootloader was corrupted.

I can enter the rommon mode and download software. I was able to tftp to rommon this image AIR-WLC2100-K9-5-2-157-0.aes, which should include a boot loader. The download however does not resolve the problem. Are there any addition steps required to install the image and boot-loader after the download to rommon? Cisco documentation only explains how to do upgrade from priamary image, not rommon.

Bellow is the output during the bootup process if it can help:

" I was able to tftp to rommon this image AIR-WLC2100-K9-5-2-157-0.aes, which should include a boot loader"

This is only the firmware. The bootloader has a suffix of "ER" in the filename.

Try to pump the bootloader the same way and see if this will solve your problem, otherwise you'll need to raise TAC and get the appliance replaced.

Sorry I made a mistake in my statement; the bootloader is a separate file, and I did load it with tftp. I was wondering if there are any additional steps besides tftp command to install the bootloader and the image. It seems like the files are loaded fine, but after reboot I am back to square one.

Sounds like you need to contact Cisco and raise a TAC.

Unfortunately the WLC's has a removable Compact Flash. It's unfotunate because, unlike the routers and some switches, it's inaccessible. For Cisco, it's just a matter of removing the lid and replacing the Compact Flash with a new one that's preloaded with an age-old bootstrap and an equally age-old firmware.

Can you please post the commands that you use in order to boot from the rommon mode in the WLC??

I can't find any information about rommon mode for the WLC in the cisco web site.

Thanks in advance
