Hi, Serial interface is having bandwidth 2Mbs. I am running Eigrp for default 50% of the bandwidth. My question is, Eigrp will use 1 Mbs for Metric calculation or passing data ? I mean, only 1 Mbs will utilize as an available bandwidth ? please clarify, if any clue.

Hello Rupesh,

for metric calculation the bandwidth value as reported in sh inter ser x/y is used expressed in kbps. so it is 2000 in your case (or 1544 see on sh int)

ip eigrp bandwidth percent command that defaults to 50% tells the router how to shape EIGRP traffic out the interface.

So the meaning is use up to 1 Mbps for EIGRP update.

So if a big topology change happens and EIGRP need to send a lot of updates it will try to shape updates at 1 Mbps.

To be noted EIGRP updates require acknoweledgment from neighbor(s).

Hope to help

Giuseppe
