traceroute result

Hi,

This can be very simple but I forgot where I put the explanation to this.

Thus anyone knew or have a link to the explanation why the first packet in hop 5 in "First traceroute to 192.168.8.1" have a high latency?

- All the devices are routers.

- No problem with the link.

- No error in the interface.

- All interface is hardcoded.

- Not congested.

- Router is idle (not busy).

- No problem with routing.

Thanks,

Dandy

First traceroute to 192.168.8.1

1 1ms <1ms <1ms 192.168.1.1

2 10ms 13ms 9ms 192.168.2.1

3 9ms 10ms 9ms 192.168.3.1

4 15ms 13ms 13ms 192.168.4.1

5 200ms 15ms 16ms 192.168.5.1

6 18ms 15ms 16ms 192.168.6.1

7 17ms 15ms 16ms 192.168.7.1

8 * * * Request timed out.

Second traceroute to 192.168.8.1

1 1ms <1ms <1ms 192.168.1.1

2 11ms 12ms 9ms 192.168.2.1

3 9ms 9ms 11ms 192.168.3.1

4 15ms 14ms 15ms 192.168.4.1

5 15ms 15ms 16ms 192.168.5.1

6 17ms 15ms 15ms 192.168.6.1

7 17ms 15ms 16ms 192.168.7.1

8 * * * Request timed out.

I have this problem too.

It could also be transient congestion. (Although I to would most suspect the device being slow to respond.)

PS:

Keep in mind, devices such as routers consider responding to ping or traceroute low priority. To get much more accurate results, you need to use, at least on Cisco routers, their dedicated responder function (part of their SLA support).

Router is busy performing an ARP request.
