Can an ethernet type connection be set up between lan interfaces on a 3725 and a 2620XM
routers- If so, is there any requirements, like IOS version, card type and so on

John
Do you mean an etherchannel connection between the 2 routers ?

Yes - or Multilink using ethernet interfaces

John,
Built-in Ethernet interfaces of 3725 and 2620XM can't perform etherchannel functions. You need HWIC-4ESW card or something like that to do so.
Multilink would be Point-to-Point Protocol story.

Hello John,
between two routers I would use IP load balancing using two indipendent L3 links.
Both static routes or a dynamic routing protocol of your choice can handle two equal cost paths.
Normal CEF load balancing uses an exor of IP SA and IP DA and an hash (seed).
So packets of each flow follow a single path for each direction.
If multiple traffic flows are present you should get fair usage of the two links in both directions.
Hope to help
