Traceroute question

Please take a look at the following traceroute produced with the tracert command on windows. After it I have a couple of questions.

This are the questions:

1)Why hop #10 takes more time than hope #11? Do time is measure from the last hop instead of the origin point?

2)If time is measure from the origin point why when I use the ping command to “ping” the destination I get the same time duration as in the last hop?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

The time to receive the ICMP Time exceeded from an intermediary node is not related to the time to reach the final host.

It's more related about how the node is busy when it received this packet as such packet are usually marked as low priority. I could also be related to the bw available on the return path..

You have other occurence of this behavior in your traceroute like between node 13 and 14 for example

Laurent.

Hi, besides what laurent said, the disparity in times may be a result of asymmetric routing, especially since you're going over the Internet.
