Netbios over OSPF

Hi all,

I have two routers running OSPF, and wish to run my 1980's Netbios across OSPF to the LAN's in both ends.

Is it possible at all, I know I have to forward UDP 137-139, but what about the broadcasts? Can they be "forwarded"?

Thanks,

Philip

Hi Philip,

Can you explain a little more what it is you're trying to do? I'm afraid your question doesn't make any sense! :-)

OSPF is a routing protocol - i.e. it is a method for routers to dynamically build their routing tables.

It wouldn't have anything to do with what you are trying to run over your network.

Hi again,

I have two LAN, one at each downlink on a Cisco 1841. The two 1841 run OSPF between them. On the two LAN the respective user equipment wish to run netbios in order to communicate.

Netbios uses broadcast, which isn't routed beyond LAN - hence it doesn't arrives at the other LAN.

So - I'm looking for a way to "forward" these broadcasts.

Thanks

Basically I want to get Netbios broadcasts between 192.168.2/24 and 192.168.1/24.

See attached pdf.

Is this just for your users to access network shares on pre 2000 Servers?

If so just install WINS, then add the WINS server to your DHCP server settings (Or add manually to each PC's TCP/IP settings if yo don't run DHCP)

Nick

"True" NetBIOS or NetBIOS over IP?

"True" but with the broadcasts from Netbios forwarded - if possible.

Also look at forwarding UDP.
