I am running the following:

isco IOS Software, C2960 Software (C2960-LANBASE-M), Version 12.2(35)SE5

and I am unable to define static routes?

I thought ip routing is enabled by default.

Any idea?

"I thought ip routing is enabled by default."

Not on the 2960 as this is a L2 switch only. Try

"ip default-gateway x.x.x.x"

Jon

hi Jon,

Is this not for management purposes only? Thus for management from another vlan.

As you say it's a layer 2 switch isn't it that you can only define 1 SVI for management. The switch itself can only be used as L2 access switch with ports in different vlans and uplink to a core/distribution layer device

I believe a 2960 is a layer2 switch which doesn't route. You'll need to create your static routes on your router.

Roni,

Okay Cisco 2960 switch is a layer2 switch.

I thought ip routing is enabled by default.

It's not true. You can't do that.

IP address assigned to the vlan interface of Layer2 switch will be used for management propose.

The 2960 switch isn't Layer 3 capable, meaning no static routes and no ip routing. You can only define a management IP with a default gateway.

edit: sorry a couple of minutes late ;-)

Ingo,

That's fine. (grin)
