We are in the process of upgrading our 6509 switches from 12.2.18SXH3 to 12.2.33SXI1. The current image on the 6509E is System image file is "sup-bootdisk:s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-33.SXH3.bin". We are looking to upgrade to 12.2(33)SXI1. I need the step by step process to upgrade this including what to avoid in the process. Any useful documentation will be good for me.

Hi Stephen,
Is there any specific reason to upgrade the switch to 12.2.33SXI1. Looks like you are running a latest image on this 12.2.33SXH3 as per the boot path listed above.
I wouldnt recommend to upgrade the IOS unless you have some specific software/hardware requirement.
Please see the link below for IOS upgrade.
Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Hello,
I agree the version is fairly recent but the IOS version has so many bugs as listed in Cisco documentation hence the need for the upgrade. Example of such bug is CSCsu21040 -- AAA Enable authentication prompts for username/password instead of just password. The caveats was solved in Release 12.2(33)SXH4
