Etherchannel port config

Designing a 4 interface etherchannel config on an access 6509E with IOS (s72033-adventerprisek9_wan-mz.122-18.SXE4.bin)....

Do all 4 ints have to be on the same card or can I spread them onto two cards on the same 6509? (CARD TYPE: CEF720 48 port 10/100/1000mb Ethernet WS-X6748-GE-TX)

You can spread them across as many cards as you like as long as the cards are in the same chassis.

Edit - obviously the ports need to be same speed.

Better design is to spread them. The 6748 is quite capable of this.

You run into issues with etherchannels on a 6148 or a 6548, due to the MUX design of the ports- trying to put etherchannels on the same line card can cause you some big headaches if you're not careful with your port groups. Just keep that in the back of your head in the fugure.

Ok, good stuff. So I have them now like this (they are all 1gb speed - this is for 1 of the 2 6509E's) >>

1-4pt EC on 6/21-24

1-4pt EC on 6/25-28

1-4pt EC on 7/21-24

1=4pt EC on 7/25-28

Should I spread them more? to another 48pt card? OR spread them to higher ports on slots 6 and 7? Def don't want to overrun the card or data bus.

If i'm reading you right you are still limiting each etherchannel to the same card. What you want to do is spread each etherchannel across multiple cards ie.

etherchannel 1

1-2pt on 6/21 - 22

3-4pt on 7/21 - 22

etherchannel 2

1-2pt on 6/23 - 24

3-4pt on 7/23 - 24

then if an individual line card fails you still have at least 2 ports working in your etherchannel.

Of course if you are backing up EC 6/21-24 with EC 7/21-24 then you could do it that way as well.

k, I'll do that. I'm just in the design stage and don't have all the requirements yet but I'll spread em like that.

no Jon, they are 4 seperate sun servers fully meshed to the two 6509E's. thx.
