How many still use Exchange server protection?

Our Ironports do such a great job at stopping viruses that for the past year our ScanMail for Exchange product has not found a single virus on our Exchange cluster. The only thing ScanMail finds are password-protected zip files. We cannot afford to renew our licenses for ScanMail and every big AV vendor out there licenses per mailbox, which puts the cost out of reach for us at 7000+ mailboxes. I'm wondering how many other Ironport customers forgo an additional AV product to scan Exchange? Of course we have a server-based product running to protect the OS on our Exchange servers. Thanks.

We still use an AV on the Exchange server as we simply don't trust our users! While the desktop AV should pick anything up that they happen to bring in (which would break our AUP anyway), we feel slightly safer having the mail server check stuff too!

Hello,

We have 3 layers of AV defense in our E-mail systems (Ironport with Sophos and VOF, our routing systems with McAfee and Exchange/Domino with Trend).
And, believe it or not, all three layers are catching viruses. Of course the Ironports catches the majority, but I thing we have at least every two months a hit on all the underlying systems.
Not problem for us to confirm our management that we need those licenses :-)
