Hi all
can anyone tell me
what the PFC3/DFC3 do in the sup720? are they all part on the same line card?

Hello Carl,
PFC3 is the multilayer central engine and it is part of Sup720 (a daughter card of it ).
DFC3 are daughter cards that can be installed on linecards (not all types only the ones that can inteconnect to 720GBps switching fabric) in order to achieve distributed multilayer switching:
DFC3 can store a complete copy of CEF table built by sup720/MSFC3/PFC3.
traffic between two DFC3 equipped linecards don't need to use supervisor resources not even to consult the CEF table in the PFC3 for first packets of flows (lookup is done in DFC3): packets are moved in the switching fabric
In reality a chassis can host different types of linecards with different capabilities so a mix of centralized vs distributed forwarding happens.
Hope to help
Giuseppe
