Hi,
I have a 6509 that will be used to power many non Cisco Phones. My concern are the power supplies in the unit. I based my calculations on the actual power draw of the phones (4.4W). The supplies are fine for this, my question is whether the 6509 makes it power calculations from what is actually being used or whether it uses the allocated power. As the phones will not use CDP, they will register as Class 2 POE(802.3af)7W, therefore the power supplies are not big enough. If it does use the allocated power for the calculation, is there any way of limiting this?
Many Thanks

You can restrict the power consumption (at least on a 3560).
NORSW03(config-if)#power inline consumption ?
<4000-15400> milli-watts
Hope that helps.

Colin,
Sorry for the delay i have been out of the office.
The command is slightly different on the 6500:
CROOM.SW.10.1(config-if)#power inline static max ?
<4000-7000> milli-watts
Do you think that this will overcome the potential over subscription of the power, by telling the 6500 it must only supply 4.4W of power to each port?
Many Thanks.

I was told by an experienced VoIP CCIE that that command will do exactly that, restrict the power to the port.
