BGP established state

Hi,

One of the wan routers had connectivity issues. While verifying, there was an event found a day back.

%BGP-5-ADJCHANGE: neighbor X.X.X.X Down Peer closed the session

But check on bgp neigbor status says

BGP state = Established, up for 6d08h.

1.What does first log mean & how to troubleshoot it?

2.Why does the recent event does get on the bgp state, it still shows up for 6 days and 8 hours whereas log shows an event recently.

Please suggest.

Thanks.

Hello Sunny,

this looks like strange.

Unless some soft-configuration has been used the first message should be the trace of having received a BGP notification message that should lead to session down.

The neighbor didn't like a message received from you and so it sended a BGP notification message.

Probably soft-reconfiguration made the BGP session to be up again with a single exchange of messages (your router could have holded the BGP prefixes for the neighbor as a result of soft inbound)

Hope to help

Giuseppe
