Hello Paulo,

you can follow this procedure

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/hardware/Config_Notes/78_15893.html#wp20175

there is a note that says:

The MEM-XCEF720-1GB memory upgrade is required for the DFC3BXL upgrade only and is included as part of the DFC3BXL daughter card kit only.

probably the DFC3CXL has already on it all the required memory

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Hi Giuseppe,

Thanks for your reply. I wasn't sure about it, because in another document, says that the DFC3CXL uses memory that's installed on the switching module.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/ios/12.2SX/release/notes/ol_14271.html#wp3051628

The datasheet of the WS-X6704-10GE says that the default onboard memory is 256MB and in another document I found a question about the current shipping default memory for CEF720 distributed forwarding cards (DFCs), where the default memory for DFC3CXL is 1G, the same of DFC3BXL.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps708/qa_c67_457347.html

It's difficult now, how to know what document I can trust.

Thanks again!

Regards,

Paulo

Hello Paulo,

you're right we face different information.

from the first link you have provided there is a note:

>>WS-F6700-DFC3CXL uses memory that is installed on the switching module.

but in second document table-4 says a DFC3CXL has 1GB Ram as DFC3BXL with no upgrade options.

I personally think the DFC3CXL has on board memory otherwise the procedure I've found should provide exceptions or notes.

The DFC needs to have the same amount of memory of RP and SP on supervisor because it has to host a complete copy of the CEF table as built and mantained by supervisor PFC.

This is to perform dCEF on linecards with dCEFs.

This is also the reason behind the recommendation to have the DFC in sync (same version) with the supervisor version.

It makes sense to have the memory chip on the DFC and the linecard to provide memory for packet handling (buffers and queues) and connections to 720Gbps switching fabric.

However, in the bulletin of year 2004 where the DFCs are presented specify memory as installed on the linecard.

see

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps708/prod_bulletin0900aecd8017a5db.html

In that document DFC3C or DFC3CXL are not present.

DFC3CXL and DFC3C are presented in VSS bulletin nov 2007

table 3 states memory is 1GB on DFC3CXL.

see

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps9336/prod_bulletin0900aecd806ee29a_ps708_Products_Bulletin.html

Edit:

in WS-6708 presentation it speaks of 1GB Ram

Table 1 and Table2

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Hello Giuseppe,

Thanks again. I think you are right. I will follow the procedure of upgrade the same way at the document.

If it's not right or I have problem in the window maintenance, I reply again.

Regards,

Paulo
