Need router recommendation

I am working with a small parochial school and their network of about 50 PCs.

They currently have a Cisco 1720 router that their ISP manages and they have used a Linksys BEFSR41 router for DHCP and NAT.

I am investigating a replacement router as the Linksys seems to get hung up frequently affecting their Internet accesss.

Can you recommend a Cisco router to perform these functions for us?

thanks,

Tim T.

Hi Tim,

I agree with Tom. If you want a Cisco router that you can do CLI or HTML configuration, then 850/870 series Integrated Services Router (ISR) is a viable option.

Tim,

The 1720 could certainly handle these functions. One option would be to have the ISP setup the existing router for you. If you're looking to buy another router that you can manager, take a look at the 1800 series. The 1811 would likely work well for your scenario.

I approached the ISP about modifying the router and they do not want to support that for us. I can understand as they have many education accounts and cannot do customization at that level.

That router is several hundred dollars. I did not mention that our budget is limited. Can you recommend something cheaper?

Thanks

Tim

Tim,

Any Cisco router is going to be several hundred dollars. However, if you need something cheaper, take a look at the 800 series. The 851 should do the job.

Thank you for your patience. This is relatively new to me.

What do you think of the Cisco RVS4000 router? Too light weight? I just did a search sort on price, low to high.

Tim

This is a Linksys router and is definitely on the low end. It does perform the functions that you need. However, I would lean towards something more robust for an office of 50 people.

Buy a used 17xx or 26xx. They are real cheap and you wont be out too much if they fail.
