The following link is to Cisco's Internetworking Technology Handbook" - it's a free online version of a very large, expensive book.

It's a very good overview, and gives some high-level looks at how all the parts relate, and where all the protocols fit in.

If you're looking towards the CCNA (and beyond) after reviewing that document, then the Cisco library for CCNA is as good as any. Read it and study to learn, not to pass the test; you'll be a better networking engineer in the long run.

If you are just getting into networking because you heard it's good for big money, then don't even start. Find something you like to do and pursue that ... the money will come.

Good Luck
