When you start up an AP in sniffer mode it will NOT service clients for the duration of the time it is running that way. If you don't have adequate coverage then you may have to be careful with this. Another alternative is to temporarily deploy a spare AP in the vicinity and then use it as a sniffer AP.

Not nearly as convenient or quick but it may be safer for you.
