cisco IP phone 7960 test

Unanswered Question
Jun 1st, 2009

IP phone continuously display the following message,

1. Configuring CM

2. Opening

Can anyone let me know the issue please? Is that looking for Call manger software from the router? if so, why call manager software is not available in 2610 router. show telephony-service is not recognized by 2610 router to check for CME software.

How can I verify, setup, configure CME on my 2610 router? So that I can test 7960 IP phone.

Thanks in advance.

I have this problem too.

Justin Brenton Mon, 06/01/2009 - 09:04

Hi Siva,

The TFTP server is what provides the firmwar files/server information to the phone.

Here's a example

ip http authentication local

Do you have your ephone and ephone dn created?

sivaprakasam81 Mon, 06/01/2009 - 09:12

Justin, How do I create ephone and ephone dn? How do verify/make cisco telephony service is supported by 2610 router? When I give router#show telephony-service ; is not recognized command.

Thank you,

Kenneth Mohammed Mon, 06/01/2009 - 09:13

Hello Siva,

Please see my above post. 2610 doesnt support CME. You need to have a 2610XM.

Hope that helped, if so please rate.

Justin Brenton Mon, 06/01/2009 - 09:31

Hi Siva,

The configuration examples above will assist you in the ephone creation and understanding the terminology associated with this.

Please review the documents as I believe this will help you greatly.

How do i configure ephone and ephone de?

Why do I need TFTP server? CME will come along with Router?

My IP phones are getting IP address from the router(dhcp server), still do i need to go for 26xxXM?

Kenneth Mohammed Mon, 06/01/2009 - 09:39

Hello Shiva,

In order for the router to recognize the CME software that will be installed on flash memory, you need to have a 2600XM router running the proper IOS version. Otherwise, it wont work at all.

You need to have this before the router will let you configure ephone and ephone-dn's.

The phones need a TFTP server because this is how the phones pull their firmware and configuration files when they are trying to register with the CME router. In order for the phones to know where the tftp server is, you need to configure option 150 under your dhcp pool in the router. ex:

ip dhcp pool Phones

option 150 ip

Therefore, the short answer to your question would be yes, you need to have a 26xxXM router. Otherwise, you can use the GNS3 that Justin suggested.

Also, the CME doesnt come with the router, it will need to be downloaded from CCO, and you need to verify that you are running a version of IOS that supports voice.

Hope that helped, if so please rate.

sivaprakasam81 Mon, 06/01/2009 - 09:52

I was informed that any recent 26xx , 36xx router will have CME and can be verified by looking into router#show telephony-service.

Thank you,

Do I need to use any voice interface card on the 2600XM router to connect with the Cisco IP phone?

Kenneth Mohammed Mon, 06/01/2009 - 10:00

You only need to use a voice interface card if you plan on connecting to the PSTN. If not, and you just want to do VOIP, then you will not need any voice card. You will just need a router with an etherswitch card that has POE, or a POE capable switch. If your switch isnt POE capable, then you will need the power cube to power the phone.

Hope that helped, if so please rate.

sivaprakasam81 Mon, 06/01/2009 - 10:04

Can you please list all cards that supports the following ,

1. PoE ethernet card for 2600XM router

2. Voice interface card to connect PSTN

3. Ethernet card for 2600XM to connect with PoE switch.

Thank you,

Kenneth Mohammed Mon, 06/01/2009 - 10:17

1. The etherswitch card part number is HWIC-4ESW. Not sure if this will be supported by 2600XM.

2. There are a variety of voice cards to connect to PSTN. Are you using analog POTS line, PRI, T1 CAS? The type of PSTN connection that you plan on using will determine what kind of voice card you need.

3. If your router has a built in ethernet port (which it should), then you wont need a special card to connect to the PoE switch. You can just use a straight through cable to connect the ethernet port on the router to the switch and you should be fine.

Hope that helped, if so please rate.

I am trying to go with the existing firmware on the IP phone 7960. Do I still need TFTP server, CME software and Firmware loading configuration?

Kenneth Mohammed Mon, 06/01/2009 - 10:49

If you are using PRI, you will need a VWIC-1MFT-T1/E1. And yes, you will still need to configure the router as a TFTP server, you dont need a separate piece of hardware for this. Also, yes you will still need CME software in order for the phone to function correctly.

sivaprakasam81 Mon, 06/01/2009 - 11:12

Kenneth, can you please provide me some link to get WEb interface configuration details of IP phone 7960? I am remotly into the phone.

Kenneth Mohammed Mon, 06/01/2009 - 11:20

Well, once you get everything you need to get the CME running, the GUI files for the web interface are included with the software. You wont be able to do ANYTHING until you get the proper hardware. When you do get everything installed, you will simply browse to the IP address of the CME router (http://

Hope that helped, if so please rate.

Can I reset the IP phone to factory defaults? Once I reset the IP phone will I lose firmware on the IP phone? We are not sure about the service contract on these IP phone. How can I do factory defaults without losing firmware on the IP phone?

Thank you,

Kenneth Mohammed Mon, 06/01/2009 - 12:04

1. Yes

2. Yes

3. You can't

The CME software when you load it will have firmware loads for all of the phone models

Hope that helped, if so please rate.

sivaprakasam81 Mon, 06/01/2009 - 12:10

We will be getting a Cisco Router with CME 4.1 loaded on it(router). Will it have firmware for IP phone 7960?

Thank you,

How do I check that the Cisco Unity software is loaded into my router? Does it come along with the router voice image? I aslo need to setup voice mail. Do I need any additional hardware for that?

Thank you,

Justin Brenton Tue, 06/02/2009 - 14:11

Hi Siva,

You will need a Cisco Unity Module to install in the router.

Either a AIM-CUE or NME-AIM Module will do.

The router will come shipped with a voice image.

You can run sh version to see if the module is recognized by the post.

sh inventory should also show this info.
