Hi All,
If you have pvst+ configured in a network and one switch has a lower MAC address than all the others it will be the root bridge (assuming you havent set a any priorities). If you want to force that to be the root bridge and set a lower priority will this cause spanning-tree reconverge?
i.e Would this cause a brief outage on the LAN? Or should i schedule some downtime?
Many Thanks

Any Spanning-Tree modifications should be done during a maintenance window.

Thanks Edison - I guess I was hoping I could save some time ;-)
I will schedule a maintainence window.
Thanks again.

Any time that you change the root bridge on a PVST/STP environment, you will force a BPDU to go out to all the switches and a reconvergence to occur.
I would highly recommend scheduling some downtime.
I would also recommend looking into converting to Layer 3 connections between the devices to reduce and remove STP from the network. The routing protocols have a faster reconvergence than Spanning Tree in the event of a link failure.
