Solved: Migrating from Business Edition to Full UC + Unity Connection

I'm taking a customer from UCM Business Edition 6.1 to full UC 7.1.2 on 3 servers. I am unable to find any documents about this process, so I wanted to run my plan by the forum to see if there are any holes in it.

First, I'm upgrading BE to 7.1.2. Then, using the hardware replacement guide for UCM and Unity Connection, I'm going to build a new UCM publisher and Unity Cxn both w/ the IP address of the current server. Then I'll do a disaster backup of UCM and Unity and restore them to their respective servers (this will be on a separate network of course).

Then I'll change the IP addresses of Unity Cxn and UCM Publisher for their new segment. At that point, I'll install the servers in their new location and swing DHCP to the new cluster. After everything bakes for a day or so, I'll re-install the current UCMBE server as subscriber 1 in the new cluster and shift the phones accordingly.

Does anybody see any problems w/ this plan?

AFAIK, you will not be able to restore data back onto the CM and CX server separately. When you run DRS on the CUCMBE, it will spit out files which will be used by both CM and CX. I think your best bet will be to do a fresh build.

Yes, the restore fails on the UC. I've been able to get most everything together w/ BAT and COBRAS though, luckily avoiding a build from scratch.

Was this successful for you? Is this the recommended way to move from Business Edition to enterprise CUCM and Unity Connection on separate machines? If you do this, are you able to reuse the old MCS 7828?

Jeff,

Other than a complete rebuild (and barring any new information) this is the only way to do it. It was actually very easy. You can export pretty much every data base item from UCMBE to UCM and you'll need to tweak a few things which should be fairly obvious (e.g. Call Manager Group, etc). COBRAS worked like a champ as well. Yes, I was able to re-use the 7828 as a UCM box. I don't think it is Unity CXN approved, but it is fine for UCM. If you're doing a Pub and a Sub, you'd want to put the 7828 where it will be doing most of the work, as it has beefier hardware than a 7825, assuming you're going with that platform.

If I would like to reuse the 7828 server for the Unified CM, what's the capacity of IP Phones supported? 1000 (same as 7825) or still remain as 500?

It will support 1000 phones. The hardware on the 7828 is more robust because they are counting on it running UCM

+ Unity Connection, so when you are only running UCM it has plenty of horsepower.
