Updating IOS

Unanswered Question
Jun 6th, 2009

I am taking Cisco CCNP classes. I have 3 old 2610 routers that I would like to update to ver12.3 so I can practice at home. I know I would need to increase memory on these routers. Is there a charge to download IOS's or would I be better off getting some newer equipment?

Thanks, Doug

I have this problem too.

Customers are only allowed to download IOS from the Cisco website when having their Cisco Accounts associated to a valid Cisco contract, also known as SmartNet.

With that said, even with the SmartNet, you are legally permitted to download a newer version of the IOS you've purchased while keeping the same feature set. Legally, you aren't permitted to purchase a 'Base IP Services' then download a 'Advanced IP Services'.

In short, if you are planning to purchase devices thinking you will be allowed to download the IOS, your thinking is incorrect.
