857 - timeout establishing ppp

Unanswered Question
Jun 9th, 2009

Hi there. I have an interesting one here. This 857 router times out when establishing ppp connection to the ISP. What's odd is that:

- if I take the router away and connect it to another ADSL line of the same ISP, it does connect Ok (same login/pwd) ;

- if I connect another router (low cost netgear or other brand), it logs in Ok.

I've called the ISP support to no avail.

Here's the appropriate log.

Hello Raphael,

this is a strange issue:

encapsulation is correct because debug output shows both input and output frames.

the PPP authentication type should be correct:

actually you receive a challenge

CHAP: I CHALLENGE id 1 len 33

then you send out a response

Jun 9 11:12:44.841: Vi1 CHAP: O RESPONSE id 1 len 37 from "[email protected]"

and the remote system doesn't answer to you neither with success or failure.

you say some router connected to another line works well and that a consumer adsl router works well on this line.

I just notice that the response is 37 bytes while the challenge is 33 bytes but I don't think they need to be exactly same size.

To perform a deeper investigation you could try to use debug atm packet to try to understand if any answer arrives from server or not.

Have you enabled also debug ppp negotiation or only debug ppp authentication ?

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Hello, and thanks for looking into this... strange issue indeed.

Both neg and auth debug are enabled.

I will try debug atm packet and see what comes out.
