The primary design advantage for MPLS was speed while making the forwarding decision.

The issue with IP routing is variable sized address examination is slow compared to fixed sized address examination, especially without dedicated accleration hardware.

With modern hardware, there's not as much of a performance difference, however the other popular feature of MPLS is its capability of supporting different virtual networks.

Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) was originally presented as a way of improving the forwarding speed of routers but is now emerging as a crucial standard technology that offers new capabilities for large scale IP networks. Traffic engineering, the ability of network operators to dictate the path that traffic takes through their network, and Virtual Private Network support are examples of two key applications where MPLS is superior to any currently available IP technology.

The one line answer is as, MPLS works on Label and it has a significant on layer 2.5. When packet comes on router and router take a forwarding decision by open packet till layer 2.5 not till layer 3. So no need to open a packet till Layer 3. Thats the reason. LDP, CEF and TDP work for this
