I need to update the IOS on a 4507R and this is my first big guy to play with. I am going to have to update a 6509 down the road.

But is there anything different I have to do to update it?

Inside the download software there are 3 options CatOS ROMMON, IOS ROMMON Software and IOS Software. Will I have to update the ROMMON before the IOS update?

Do I have to update the modules that are also connected?

The system also has 2 WS-X4515 module that are not being used What do they do? Are they for management?

The client has smartnet and everything like that is in order.

Hi.

You basically have your IOS image for the switch, download it to a flash device on the switch and then reload.

The WS-X4515 are the Supervicor IV modules which are the brain of the switch. It is actually to flash device on those you do the copy of the image file. When you have two of them, one is backup for the other. So they are definitely being used :-)

Having two Supervisory Modules actuaaly gives you the possibility of ISSU - In-Service Software Upgrade. This is a way to upgrade a system like yours with minimum or none downtime for the attached users. It depends, though, on the release of software you are upgrading FROM whether it is possible for you or not. You need at least 12.2(31)SGA or later.

A Catalyst 4500 is a modular switch where all intelligence is placed in the Supervisory Module. This means that all config is made here, all packet forwarding is done ehre, and that you only ahve to upgrade the Supervisory Module - it will afterwards take care of updating the other modules, if any of them needs updating.

Normally you just upgrade the IOS, but read the accompanying Release Note for the IOS you are upgrading to in order to verify whether or not you will need to update the ROMMON code as well.
