ACNS question

Level 4

Can a single ACNS device do the following:

1) Receive a Windows Live Stream from a Cisco WME ? I guess yes.

2) Distribute this stream in multicast to local LAN clients ? (lan is mc enabled)

3) Distribute this stream in multicast to a limited number of remote WAN clients (assuming the WAN is mc enabled).

If multicast doesn't work, fall-back to unicast for each remote client.

(there are a limited number of remote clients , ie 10 maximum)

(continue to server the local clients in multicast though !)

Geert

Geert,

1. ACNS can definitely receive live streams from WME.

2. ACNS can perform Unicast to Multicast Stream splitting for local LAN (multicast islands)

3. You can have unicast failover URLs in the nsc files so if clients do not receive a MC stream, they will then request the UC stream from the network.

Check out the following config guide for ACNS 5.5.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/waas/acns/v55/configuration/local/guide/wmtstrm.html

Hope that helps,

Dan

You should be able to attach directly to the WM Encoder. Try "http://encoder_address:8080" as your source URL.

This definitely works with a CDM and Live Program, however it should also work with broadcast alias' or multicast alias'.

Hope that helps,

Thanks for the link.

I want to stream to ACNS but without using a Windows Media Server (if possible). I need to detail a BOM and i want it to be as small as possible. I have tried with Windows Media encoder to stream to ACNS but that didn't work (it gave an error message like: "this device doesn't seem to be a Windows Media Server..). Now i am in doubt if it is possible at all. Could you specify in more detail the connection between a Windows Media Encoder (running on my portable) and an ACNS box ? Does the encoder send the stream to ACNS (push) or does ACSN pull the stream from the encoder ? Or is it impossible what i am trying to do ?

Geert

Thanks Dan. I really appreciate your feedback. I have build in some "security" in my BOM, so that i can convert to a setup with CDM if needed (2devices). I'll try the alias definition in any case also. But it is clear that in every case, the ACNS box pulls the stream from the encoder, not vice versa (encoder sending to box)

Correct, you setup the encoder with the stream/alias and the CE accesses the encoder via http:www.xxx.yyy.zzz:8080. I've attempted to use RTSP or MMS in the past but HTTP is the only one that works reliably.

Good luck!

Dan
