Running Same VLAN / Subnet Across Two Locations

Hi,

We have a project to migrate services from one Data Centre to another within the UK for a large organisation.

We currently have a large corporate Verizon MPLS WAN with 622mb links into both Data Centres (old and new).

Due to the large number of servers our customer would like to keep the same IP addresses in use on all servers - and due to the large number of servers we won't be able to move them all in one go. This means we will need to have servers on the same IP subnet in different locations at the same time - i.e. some in the old Data Centre and some in the new Data Centre.

Due to the physical distances involved (approx 200 miles) a traditional LAN extension is not available. We've also asked our WAN provider (Verizon) about a L2 Tunnelling service to effectively span the Vlan/subnet across both sites but this service is only available in the US/Canada and not the UK.

So my question is… …

Does anyone know any way of tunnelling the same Vlan or subnet between the two sites using our current WAN and any Cisco routing/tunnelling methods.?

Or, has anyone used any other WAN provider in the UK or Europe who can deliver this kind of service.?

Many thanks for any replies.

John

Hello John,

L2TPv3 in vlan mode can do the trick

see

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/12_3t/12_3t2/feature/guide/gtl2tpv3.html#wp1043064

you can use feature navigator

www.cisco.com/go/fn

to check if your platforms support it

also EoMPLS can be used but this would require to move to a Carrier supporting Carrier scenario with your provider

Hope to help

Giuseppe
