MPLS link or Direct Point to Point?

Hi,

I need to choose between using 2mb/s MPLS link or direct 2mb/s Telco line. The premises are about 1500km apart. Other than costs, is there anything to consider before choosing?

Are there any advantages or disadvantages for choosing MPLS over Direct leased line?

Thanks

Besides cost, the only advantages of MPLS that comes to mind: it often offers the capability of doing multipoint and/or VRF without reducing MTU.

Disadvantages that come to mind include: often the need to purchase some kind of CIR, often "weak" QoS support and/or it's an extra cost option, possible cloud congestion, POP locations, and often higher latency.

Hi,

a leased line over 1500km distance?

It could be a long time to repair in a case of failure in some countries :-(

MPLS backbone should be more reliable generally.

You know, that's a good point/catch. 1500 kms apart? Does this span different countries? Different Telco provider or different Service Provider?

Thanks for the reply. it is within one country and one service provider.

If that is the case, this will depend on your router(s). IPSec using Virtual Tunnel Interface (VTI) is a good place to start otherwise MPLS is not bad.

I'd prefer IPSec & VTI. :)
