Hello Ashmar,

a modular switch is a switch that has the possibility to install linecards in addition to a supervisor linecard.

Examples of modular switches in Cisco products are:

C4500 or C4000

I provide you an example from a live device:

sh module

Chassis Type : WS-C4506

Power consumed by backplane : 0 Watts

Mod Ports Card Type Model Serial No.

1 2 1000BaseX (GBIC) Supervisor(active) WS-X4013+ JAE08138TDA

2 48 10/100/1000BaseT (RJ45) WS-X4548-GB-RJ45 JAE081169NQ

3 48 10/100/1000BaseT (RJ45) WS-X4548-GB-RJ45 JAE081169NZ

4 48 1000BaseX SFP WS-X4448-GB-SFP JAB084706V7

5 48 10/100/1000BaseT (RJ45) WS-X4548-GB-RJ45 JAE08491NSS

6 48 10/100/1000BaseT (RJ45) WS-X4548-GB-RJ45 JAE11097S26

this is a 4506 with a supervisor in slot1 and other modules are installed in other slots.

Hope to help

hi Giuseppe

That was an excellent response. Thank you.

I was looking down for modular SAN switches from cisco. I was looking around for cisco SAN switch with 4Gbps full-duplex FC ports with a minimum of 256 ports support per switch.
