Hi all if I was to say ping 10.100.1.255, the broadcast address of my subnet, what happens exactly ?

It depends. If you ping this address, any device that is configured to respond to directed broadcast will respond.

Windows will only accept the first reply that it gets. Certain other operating systems will accept and display all responses

Hello Carl,

if you use a router interface and you enable the following debug:

debug ip icmp

you can see that answers contain only unicast addresses with destination= ip source of original ICMP request and source address = ip address of answering host.

Hope to help

Giuseppe
