I have a 3550-24-SMI switch that I need to have specific interfaces act like interfaces on a router. Can I disable the L2 featues and turn it into an L3 only interface and assign an IP address directly to it?

Hello Nicholas,

if you had an enterprise image EMI the answer would be yes 100%.

More modern switches with base image can support intervlan routing but miss support of advanced routing protocols.

SMI in 3550 should be able to be a multilayer switch.

try the following:

int f0/x

no switchport

ip address x.x.x.x y.y.y.y

no shut

if it accepts this and you can reach a device on the other end of the port you are fine

Hope to help

Giuseppe

It's been a loooooooooooooong night but you may need the "ip routing enable" first.
