How long should it take for a phone to start?

Brikers12

Since this is my first time i've setup a phone system I am unsure if the startup time for the ip phones on our network is normal. For example our Cisco SPA525G takes around 2 minutes to startup or restart. Most of the time is spent loading the XML files. I am just concerned that this is not normal and there may be something wrong with the network or setup.

This is not normal. Can you please collect the following debug "debug tftp events". This will tell us which files the phone is looking for, and presumably not getting, from the UC500.

Thanks,

Marcos

These debugs are not the same as the TFTP debugs, although they are related. You need to telnet to the UC500 and enable the "debug tftp events", then type "terminal monitor" and reset a phone (power cycle). Then disable debugs by doing "undebug all".

Thanks,

Marcos

thanks for the reply! Its good to know its not normal.

I'm unsure how to get the output from CLI "debug tftp events". Do I need another command after that to output? Would i type "debug tftp events" then some output command then restart the phone and watch that output?

i'm not sure how to use the CLI for debug, but I think i was able to use the CCA "Voice Troubleshooting log" feature. I enabled debug of "IP Phones(SCCP)" then restarted the phone and then generated the log. I have attached the zip file containing the log files. Searching for "xml" in these log files shows some TFTP lines revering to the xml files.

Looking at the logs it seems it trys and fails to get the xml files several times, with a bunch of socket errors, stuff like "it's a stale socket! delete it!!".

Also watching the phone load up, it seems to hang on loading DistinctiveRingList.xml the longest.

Hi Tervor,

For example our Cisco SPA525G takes around 2 minutes to startup or
restart. Most of the time is spent loading the XML files. I am just
concerned that this is not normal and there may be something wrong with
the network or setup.

Can i ask if you are using the 525 in wireless mode or Wireline mode?

I have seen it take up too 2 minutes in wireless mode, but never seen it take that long in wireline mode.

to debug the tft just do the following at the command line:

1. term mon

2. debug tftp events

Use a program like putty:

http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/x86/putty.exe

Choose either SSH or Telnet, if you first configured the box using CCA then either of them will be enabled, i prefer SSH myself but that is an each to his own thing.

You can then right click at the top on the barand go to "copy all to clipboard"

It might be a good idea to try and do it when the machine is going to be doing less traffic, it helps with sorting through the log if there is not much activity happening on the system that might appear during that specific debug.

Cheers,

David.

the phone is using wired mode, NOT wireless.

At first blush, it looked like its spending alot of time retrying for ringtones.

Phone should start in a minute or 2 (Wired or Wireless).

If you use the phone GUI to RESET the phone, does it take long too?

If you go to the phone user preferences and select ringtones, can you "play" them (if watching TFTP DEBUG EVENTS during this, you can see it retrieving them from flash)   Not chirp1 and chirp2, those are on the phone, but maybe try the 3rd , 4th, 5th.

If you cant, the files may not be on flash in the right directory or the tftp server statements may not match (show run | inc tftp-server)

Did you auto format the flash on this system when you upgraded using CCA 2.0.x to 7.0.3 zip?  That is recommended.  Did you do any OOB CLI on this machine?

Are the files the phone is looking for on flash available and in the correct directory?  I would check there first.

The phone takes around the same time to start wether its a fresh boot or done through the GUI`s restart.

I see all the .raw ring files in the ringtones folder.

RingList.xml and DistinctiveRingList.xml but this `United_States` folder doens`t exist nor does SPA525G-cfg.xml or the ITS folder...

I did upgrade my UC520, I backed up the flash disk in my computer, then wiped it clean and copied the update files to it.

Does show run | inc tftp-server show whats physically on the CF card, or just what the config thinks is there.

On the phone there are only 2 ringtones listed, chirp1 and chirp2.

That shows what the tftp server is configured to share, but not necessarily what is being shared.

The ITS folder is different.  You can see items there with...

show telephony-service tftp-bindings

You need to do a dir flash: to see what is on flash.  There will be folders there that you also need to do a dir on to see if the files are actually there.

You can also view what is on the flash using CCA.
