Hi all

can anyone tell me if all line cards on say a 6059-e forward all traffic locally if going from port to port ? ie does it have a cam table on the card itself, or does it need to ask the Supervisor engine ?

Hello Carl,

it depends on the linecard model and from what submodule is installed:

a 6704 10-GE ports can mount a CFC (for centralized forwarding) or a DFC (for distributed forwarding)

Oldest linecards have only connection to a shared bus and none of the options above are available for them

Hope to help

All line cards? Logically no, physically perhaps.

Only cards with DFCs can make local card forwarding decisions.

However, even when the sup makes the forwarding decision, it's not clear whether the data packets needs to cross chassis bus/fabric if moving between ports on same card. (Ideally such data would stay off chassis bus/fabric.)
